It is now over fifty years since the death of Don Milani. The prior of Barbiana died on June 26, 1967, four months before the trial for apology of crime. To justify his absence in the debate in that he was gravely ill, Don Milan wrote a statement of defense generally known as “Letter to the Judges”, in which he reiterates his firm belief that, when laws are unjust, we must fight to change them, and it is the duty of every citizen to take action when the principles of justice, freedom and truth are under threat.

Lella Costa is one of the most beloved Italian authors and actresses. In her career, which has been marked by a strong concern for social issues, she has trod the boards of major Italian theaters. She stated: “Don Milani does not content himself with enunciating a principle. Too many people do that already. He does not, he forces you to accountability and consistency. A great firmness and strength of mind mark all his words on war: it is another great teaching he gives us. Ethics not big rules or little rules, but is determined by some set of firm and inalienable principles.”
