A REFLECTION BY ABRAHAM YEHOSHUA AT MANY FAITHS 2017

Friday, September 15, 2017 – “For the inclusion of all differences” is the title of the speech that writer Abraham Yehoshua gave at the Basilica S. Maria Maggiore in Bergamo Old Town, on the occasion of the 2017 edition of ”Many Faiths Under the Same Sky”, a series of meetings promoted by ACLI and supported also this year by the Pesenti Foundation.

Today, we are called to live in an increasingly plural society, we need to create Middle Earths and open up to others. Literature has always explored the relation between memory and identity, weaves the threads of a world enriched by diversity and shows the way to build “an inclusion of differences”, where men and women of different faiths and cultures can enter into constructive relations of mutual respect.Translation by Paolo Noseda.

Abraham Yehoshua, born in Jerusalem in 1936, is a professor at the University of Haifa and other foreign universities. He is considered one of the most important Israeli authors. At the core of his work are the relationships among peoples from different cultures and religions. His many writings, translated into 28 languages, have won numerous awards (the latest being from the Scuola Normale of Pisa, Italy, in 2012). Among his novels: “A Journey to The End of The Millennium” and “A Woman in Jerusalem”.

He is one of those familiar voices you have always heard and recognized immediately. Paolo Noseda is one of the most famous and appreciated Italian interpreters. Over the years he has been the interpreter of many famous international celebrities from show business, politics and culture. He has finely honed his talent word by word, sentence by sentence, building on what is justly the pride of this profession: the curiosity about what is “other” from us. He described the delicate profession of interpreting in the book “The Voice of the Other” published by Sperling & Kupfer in 2012.
