URBAN NEXUS – CITIES AND HYPER PLACES

28-29 settembre 2018 | Conference “Urban Nexus – Cities and Hyper Places”.

Coordinator Emanuela Casti, Director of the Center for Territorial Studies of the University of Bergamo (CST), head of DiathesisLab and creator/coordinator of the RIFO project supported by the Pesenti Foundation.

The conference presents the results of the Urban Nexus research, funded by the University of Bergamo within the Excellence Initiatives Program and coordinated by the Center for Territorial Studies in collaboration with the Departments of Foreign Languages, Literatures and Cultures, and Management, Information and Production Engineering. This research promoted a partnership with two foreign universities, the EPFL (Ecole Polytechnique Fédérale de Lausanne) and the Anglia Ruskin University of Cambridge and was supported by ISTAT in Rome (working group on smart cities and Big Data) and from the CNR-IREA in Milan.

Starting from the dynamism of the “city” in the Age of globalization and its polycentric and reticular configuration, the research has investigated the use of Big Data in socio-territorial analysis and has experimented with new algorithms able to process and visually communicate the complexity of information.

Following the datadriven science paradigm, which integrates the knowledge of computer science with territorial sciences, some interpretations and elaborations have been produced and compared with those coming from data collected by public institutions. The aim is to trace the dynamism of the inhabitants and to show the polarity of urban nodes.

The research covered the new forms of public space – the socalled ““hyper places”” such as “shopping centers, airports, stations, attraction parks, cultural sites” – and urban mobility that are also reconfiguring medium-sized cities like “Bergamo, Lausanne and Cambridge”.

Both the complexity and the potential of a multidisciplinary group have become evident to conceive hybrid methodologies and analytical approaches, able to merge the interpretative skills of geographers and local analysts with those of the computational systems of engineers.

The conference presents to international experts the results achieved by the network of researchers and offers to the public and private actors of the territory a platform of ideas and reflections in the sign of technological transfer to which the University of Bergamo responds as action of Public Engagement.
